The Drinking Water and Wastewater Management Sector


​Players of the sector

​​72 undertakings, the activity of which is regulated by the NERC, are operating in the municipal drinking water and wastewater management sector, and they are supplying the drinking water and wastewater management services to households and commercial customers.

Quantities

In 2020, the drinking water supply and wastewater management undertakings provided the drinking water supply and wastewater management services to 1,12 million household customers and 39.9 thousand commercial customers. In 2020, the drinking water supply undertakings totally sold 105.6 million m3 of drinking water and sales of the wastewater treatment services totaled 104.1 million m3.

​Revenues

In 2020, the revenues of the water supply undertakings equaled EUR 197.2 million. In the respective period, the costs incurred in providing the drinking water supply and wastewater management services equaled EUR 181,5 million.

Investments

In 2021, the investments in the drinking water supply and wastewater management infrastructure totaled EUR 111 million, from this amount 28 percent were the allocations from the European Union structural funds, the state and municipality funds in the structure of financing the investments equaled 18 percent, 54 percent were the funds of the water suppliers.

At the end of 2016, the value of the non-current assets of the drinking water supply and wastewater management undertakings was EUR 1.51 billion: the value of the assets acquired from subsidies and grants equaled EUR 0.87 billion (58 percent of the total assets). The investments were aimed at the development of the services, improvement of the reliability of supply and the reduction of costs.
